Review Methodology

Every review on Fieldnote follows the same process, whether the product was purchased independently, provided by a manufacturer for testing, or already owned by the reviewer.

What we test

We use products the way a reader actually would, not just for an afternoon, but across real tasks over time. For software, that means daily use in real workflows. For hardware, it means using it as a primary device wherever possible, not just running it through a checklist of specs.

How we rate

Ratings reflect a combination of build quality or reliability, real-world performance, value for money, and how well a product serves the people it's realistically built for. A high price alone never earns a high score, and a low price never excuses poor reliability.

What every review includes

Beyond a score, every review is written to answer the questions that actually decide a purchase: who the product is genuinely for, who should probably avoid it, clear pros and cons, how it compares to alternatives, whether it's worth the price, and our honest long-term impression rather than just first-week enthusiasm.

Independence from affiliate relationships

Whether an article contains affiliate links has no bearing on the rating a product receives. We've given negative or mixed reviews to products with affiliate programs attached, and we'll continue to. See our editorial policy.

Provided review units

When a manufacturer provides a product for testing at no cost, we disclose that in the article. The unit is returned or donated after testing wherever the manufacturer's program allows, and providing a unit never guarantees coverage or a positive rating.

Updates and re-testing

Software changes, prices shift, and products get discontinued. When we become aware of a meaningful change, we update the article and note the revision date rather than leaving an outdated review live unchanged.
