Notion vs. Obsidian: Which Should You Use in 2026?
Both are excellent note-taking tools built on very different philosophies. Here's how to decide which one fits the way you actually work.
Notion and Obsidian solve the same basic problem (where do you put everything you need to remember) in almost opposite ways. We’ve used both daily for over a year. Here’s how they actually compare, not just on features but on how it feels to use each one.

How they store your data
This is the single biggest practical difference. Notion stores everything in its own cloud database: you don’t get local files you can open with another app. Obsidian stores notes as plain Markdown files on your device, which you own outright and can move, back up, or edit with any text editor, with or without Obsidian installed at all.
Notion: structured, collaborative, all-in-one
Notion’s real strength is databases: tables that can be viewed as boards, calendars, or lists, with relations between them. That makes it a strong fit for teams tracking projects, or for anyone who wants a single tool for notes, tasks, and light project management together.

Cons
- Your notes live in Notion's cloud, not as files you control
- Can feel slow with very large workspaces

Obsidian: local-first, linked, built to last
Obsidian’s core idea is the linked note: pages connect to each other with simple [[double bracket]] links, building up a web of notes over time. Because everything is a plain text file on your own device, there’s no risk of losing access if a company shuts down or changes its pricing.

- Notes are plain Markdown files you fully own
- Bidirectional linking is excellent for long-term knowledge building
- Large plugin ecosystem for customization
Cons
- Weaker built-in collaboration than Notion
- Structured data (tables, databases) needs plugins to feel as smooth
- More setup required to get the most out of it
Best for
- Notion: teams that want shared, structured project tracking
- Obsidian: individuals building a long-term personal knowledge base
Not recommended for
- Notion: anyone who wants full local ownership of their notes
- Obsidian: teams that need real-time, Google-Docs-style collaboration
The verdict
Neither tool is objectively better. They’re built for different jobs. If your notes need to be shared and structured across a team, Notion’s databases are hard to beat. If you’re building a personal, long-lasting archive of ideas that you want to fully own, Obsidian’s local Markdown files and linking are the stronger foundation. Some of us use both: Notion for team projects, Obsidian for personal notes.
